چکیده

Most people would agree that a formalisation of granular-ity in natural language should involve notions of abstraction and detail. However in reality, this concept has proved diicult to capture formally. In this paper we examine the role of granularity in constructing explanations. This role is clariied by providing several dimensions along which any explanation task can be characterised. We argue that a combination of these dimensions can be used to deene a notion of coherence in texts. This notion of coherence gives rise to search heuristics when solving non-trivial language engineering problems such as reference resolution.

Russian Peasant Multiplication Algorithm, RSA Cryptosystem, and a New Explanation of Half-Orders of Magnitude

In his papers, J. Hobbs has observed that when people make crude estimates, they usually feel reasonably comfortable choosing between alternatives which differ by a half order of magnitude (HOM). He also provided an explanation for this level of granularity based on the need for the resulting crude estimates to represent both the original data and the result of processing this data. According t...

INTERVAL ANALYSIS-BASED HYPERBOX GRANULAR COMPUTING CLASSIFICATION ALGORITHMS

Representation of a granule, relation and operation between two granules are mainly researched in granular computing. Hyperbox granular computing classification algorithms (HBGrC) are proposed based on interval analysis. Firstly, a granule is represented as the hyperbox which is the Cartesian product of $N$ intervals for classification in the $N$-dimensional space. Secondly, the relation betwee...

Plato Seeking for “One Real Explanation” in Phaedo

What this essay is to discuss is Plato''s theory of explanation in Phaedo. In this dialogue, we observe that Socrates criticizes both the natural scientists’ explanations and Anaxagoras’ theory of Mind since he thinks they could not explain all things, firstly, in a unitary and, secondary, in a real way. Thence, we are to call what Plato is seeking as his ideal explanation in Phaedo “One Real E...

Grounding Figurative Language Use in Incompatible Ontological Categorizations

We propose a formal criterion for delineating literal from figurative speech (metonymies, metaphors, etc.). It is centered around the notion of categorization conflicts that follow from the context of the utterance. In addition, we consider the problem of granularity, which is posed by the dependence of our approach on the underlying ontology, and compare our distinction with alternative refere...

Processes of argumentation and explanation in conceptual change: results from protocol analyses of peer-to-peer dialogue

Decades of research have proven that many misconceptions of scientific notions are difficult to uproot even after intensive instructional interventions. In this paper we examine the role of argumentation and of explanation development in dyadic dialogues and their relation to consequential individual conceptual change. Two quantitative dialogue coding schemes were developed with different granu...
